MP4 to GIF Converter

Convert a short MP4 or WebM clip into an animated GIF in your browser. Set the start time, duration, width and frame rate, then download.

Files are processed locally in your browser and are not permanently stored.

Drag & drop your file here

MP4 or WebM · up to 60 MB · clips under 10 seconds work best

Frames are captured from the video in your browser and encoded to GIF on your device. The clip is never uploaded to a server.

How it works

  1. 1Select an MP4 or WebM file from your device.
  2. 2Set the start and end time of the section you want.
  3. 3Choose a GIF width and frame rate.
  4. 4Convert, preview and download.

Features

  • Runs fully offline using canvas frame capture and a JavaScript GIF encoder.
  • Start and end times to the tenth of a second.
  • Width from 160 to 720 px, frame rate from 5 to 24 fps.
  • Live progress and an in-page preview.
  • Clear errors for unsupported files and clips that are too long.

Examples

  • Reaction GIF for chat: 320 px, 12 fps, 2 seconds — usually under 1 MB.
  • Product loop: 480 px, 15 fps, 3 seconds.
  • Tutorial snippet: 600 px, 10 fps, 5 seconds.

How browser-based conversion works

The clip loads into a hidden video element, the tool seeks frame by frame and draws each frame onto a canvas, then quantises it to a 256-colour palette and writes a GIF stream. Every step uses APIs built into your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

When to use GIF and when not to

  • Use GIF for short loops that must autoplay everywhere, including email.
  • Use MP4 or WebM for anything longer — the file will be a fraction of the size.
  • Avoid GIF for gradients and film grain; 256 colours band badly.
  • For social posts upload the original video instead.

Tips

  • Trim tightly — duration affects size more than anything else.
  • Drop to 10 fps before dropping width.
  • High-contrast, flat-colour footage converts best.
