TikTok Hashtags: What They Do and How Many to Use
TikTok reads your caption, your on-screen text and your hashtags to work out what a video is about, then tests it with a small audience. Hashtags help with the first part only — but that part decides who sees it first.
How many to use
Three to five specific tags is a sensible default. They sit inside the 2,200-character caption limit and still leave the caption readable.
More tags do not widen distribution; they dilute the topic signal and squeeze out your hook.
Mixing tiers
- One broad tag for the category.
- Two or three niche tags describing the exact subject.
- One long-tail phrase that matches how someone would search for it.
- A trend or sound tag only when the video genuinely uses it.
About #fyp
#fyp, #foryou and #viral describe nothing, so they tell the algorithm nothing. They are not penalised, they are simply wasted characters — and they crowd out the tags that would have classified your video correctly.
Building reusable sets
Keep one set per content pillar rather than one for the whole account, and rotate the long-tail tag to match each video's specific subject.
