The Instagram Hashtag Strategy That Still Works

Hashtags stopped being a growth hack years ago, but they never stopped being useful. They tell Instagram what a post is about before anyone has interacted with it, and they put your content in feeds people deliberately browse.

How many hashtags should you use?

Instagram allows thirty and has publicly suggested three to five relevant ones. In practice, five to ten works well: enough to cover different levels of competition without turning the caption into a wall of blue text.

The number matters far less than the fit. Ten tags that describe your post beat thirty that do not.

Mixing tiers on purpose

  • Broad (over 5M posts): one or two, as a lottery ticket.
  • Niche (100K–2M): three to five, the core of your set.
  • Long-tail (under 100K): one or two phrases matching how people actually search.
  • Location or community tags: one, when the post is local or part of a scene.

Mistakes that quietly cost reach

  • Reusing an identical block on every post, so Instagram cannot distinguish your topics.
  • Copying a competitor's set without checking whether the tags fit your content.
  • Using tags that have been flagged for spam — always open a tag and look at the top posts.
  • Treating hashtags as a replacement for a good hook.

Measuring whether it works

Open Insights on a post and look at reach from hashtags. Compare two posts with different sets rather than judging one post in isolation, and pay more attention to saves than to likes — saves are what push a post further.
