How to Write Instagram Captions People Actually Read
A caption is not a description of the photo — the photo already did that. It is the reason to stop, and then the reason to reply.
The three-part structure
- Hook: one line that creates a question or states a claim. No greetings.
- Body: the context, story or steps. Short paragraphs, one idea each.
- Close: a single instruction — save it, try it, or answer one question.
Length by post type
- Reels: 1–2 lines, because the video carries the message.
- Carousels: medium, since people are already reading.
- Single photo: short unless there is a story worth telling.
- Educational posts: long is fine — value beats brevity.
Things that flatten a caption
- Opening with “Hey guys!” — it says nothing and costs your hook.
- Asking three questions at once, which gets none of them answered.
- Emoji used as punctuation on every line.
- A hashtag block that pushes the text out of view.
Editing pass
Delete the first sentence and see whether the caption still works. It usually does, and it now starts stronger.
